Software freedom, in practice.

Genairosity is a 508.dev initiative to put useful software within everyone's reach. We research proprietary workflows and build independent, free and open-source alternatives where that effort will help. We also contribute to existing FOSS projects.

Free from end to end

Source code, server components, and the ability to self-host belong in the open. AGPL-3.0-or-later is our preferred license. Commercial use remains permitted by our FOSS licenses; the initiative itself does not require a business case or profitability.

Independent work, documented evidence

We use public documentation and lawfully observed behavior to write original functional specifications. Sources and uncertainties are recorded. A maintainer reviews the spec before implementation begins. We exclude proprietary source, unlicensed assets, decompilation, and circumvention from our initial process.

A documented process is not a blanket legal guarantee. Doubtful inputs need review. Read the research policy.

Good enough for everyday life

Performance, accessible design, and approachable workflows are core requirements. Rust is preferred where appropriate. Linux is a first-class desktop platform; Android is the mobile priority where applicable. Cross-platform support follows the scope.

Build where the gap is

Research existing free software first. Strong existing projects deserve our effort. We choose a bounded workflow and a useful outcome, not a feature checklist for its own sake.

People choose the work

Anyone can suggest or contribute. Maintainers accept and register projects. Initial priorities follow research, interest, and available time. AI assistance is optional; any model work is started locally by a human using their tools of choice. If a project needs AI features, it should support configurable services and local model endpoints.

Honest about progress

Candidates are investigations. Registered repositories report their actual stage. “Usable” means a declared scope works, not full feature parity. Software comes with no warranty. Names of reference products identify research subjects, not affiliations.
